The Barcoo Independent began production in 2004 after DPI research indicated local desire for a newspaper with Blackall news as its sole focus, and after a pilot edition in October 2003 received an enthusiastic reception from the community.
The resuscitation of the Barcoo Independent was also seen as a means of reinvigorating local pride, something that was desperately needed in a time of hardship, drought and loss.
In 2009, the people of Blackall showed that they are still as enthusiastic about the Barcoo Independent as they were in 2003. With the help and support of local and statewide businesses, the newspaper employed a full-time journalist/editor for the first time and became a weekly publication.
